AnyPS5 hits 100% shader instruction coverage as PS5 preservation speeds up

Preserving modern consoles has historically taken a decade or more after a system launches. But on r/pcmasterrace, a project status update showed that PlayStation 5 emulation is moving faster than many expected. AnyPS5, an experimental open-source PS5 compatibility layer, announced it has achieved 100% coverage of all 1,166 GPU shader instructions, while its system libraries coverage reached nearly 85%.

Reverse-engineering modern hardware

The milestone sparked a lively discussion on r/pcmasterrace about how complex modern emulation really is. Because the PS5 is built on x86-64 AMD Zen 2 CPU cores and an RDNA 2 GPU architecture, the underlying instruction set is far closer to standard PC hardware than the bespoke Cell broadband processor in the PlayStation 3 ever was.

"What type of people are capable of doing something like this?" asked one commenter, wondering whether university courses or research labs produce these developers. The community highlighted that modern emulation requires deep low-level systems knowledge, Vulkan and shader compiler expertise, and reverse-engineering skills honed across years in open-source projects.

Preservation in an all-digital future

The discussion quickly turned to game preservation. Sony recently released a PlayStation 5 Pro without a built-in disc drive and announced that physical discs will be phased out for future releases. For collectors, that shift creates real anxiety about what happens to modern game libraries when digital servers eventually shut down.

As one commenter observed, "Emulation is not about piracy, it is about keeping history alive when hardware dies." Projects like RPCS3 for the PS3 and ShadPS4 for the PS4 have already rescued titles that never received modern PC ports. Having robust compatibility tools ensures that even if physical drives disappear from store shelves, games can still be studied and played long into the future.

The irreplaceable role of physical media

While emulation progress is exciting, physical discs remain the cornerstone of preservation. A digital download depends on Sony's authentication servers to grant a licence, but a physical disc contains the compiled data that archivists and collectors actually need. Keeping physical games in circulation and supporting local shops is what guarantees future generations can preserve the medium.
